Secretary General of Timber Association Sierra Leone, Augustine Bappi has last Saturday 5th June 2021 reaffirmed his association’s support and commitment towards promotion of sustainable and safe environmental management.
He registered their commitment during the World Environment Day celebration at Guma Dam, Mile 13 in the Western Rural district, jointly observed by government through Ministry of Environment in partnership with development partners.
Bappi called on government and development partners to prioritize sustainable use natural resources that belong to environment, .adding that it is the responsibility of everyone to protect biodiversity in our climate action efforts such as industrial practices and urban expansion.
He furthered that the country can only preserve environment through a paradigm shift from a human-centric society to an earth-cantered global ecosystem, which requires an engagement with everyone including young people who will inherit the environment.
In achieving such goals, he recommended education, sensitization and awareness rising as crucial components in safeguarding the environment for future generation, noting that when it comes to sustainable environmental management everybody has something to learn and teach. He said sustainable environmental management should not be the work of government alone thus noted that need to work with civil society organizations like Timber Association Sierra Leone, private sector, academia and the media to enhance the utilization of environment for future generation to come.
He concluded that the vision of their association is to enhance sustainable development which is referenced by the means through which they guarantee that development is directed to meet the needs of members and communities without compromising the abilities of future generations who will need the environment for survival and livelihood.
This therefore resonate in their slogan cut one plant more adding that the theme for this year celebration which is ecosystem restoration, resettling our relationship with nature should not be a burden on us but an obligation for everyone living on environment.
