Considering the oversight function of Parliament, the Committee on Technical and Higher Education, chaired by Hon. Festus Mohamed Lansana has this past Saturday concluded four days oversight visits to Eastern Technical University, Njala University, and Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology.
Speaking on the purpose of the oversight to the aforementioned universities, Hon. Lansana said the 2022 budgetary process is ongoing and parliament has supported its oversight committees to conduct a deeper supervision on ministries, departments and agencies of Government in order to get first-hand knowledge about the activities they have undertaken following the approval of the current budget by Parliament, and to also provide MPs with clear insight so as to assist MDAs to achieve their aims and objectives.
He also requested the universities to provide status updates including their successes, challenges and recommendations for improved service delivery in light of technical and higher education in the country. In furtherance, he said such information should include comprehensive data such as enrollment and tuition fees for every programme from 2019-2020 academic calendar.
Hon. Lansana, following concerns raised by authorities of the named universities, he assured them he would continue to engage the administration and Leadership of parliament for their oversight reports to be debated and recommendations therein are implemented.
The authorities of the various universities were pleased with the conduct of the oversight and appealed for continued support to improve on service delivery regarding infrastructure, water, electricity, late payments of subvention, end of service benefits and tuition fees for grant-in- aid all formed part of the enumerated challenges, in spite of the successes they outlined. A conducted tour to their facilities climaxed the oversight engagements.
